This Kind of Treasure is in Heaven
Sermon on the Mount E26 - The third section of the Sermon on the Mount's main body opens with a call to examine how we think about our stuff. Jesus makes it clear that how we relate to our money and possessions reveals how we relate to God and neighbor. He urges his listeners to not store up their treasures here on Earth but in the sky. But what is sky treasure? In this episode, Tim, Jon, and Michelle explore the differences between our earthly values and the values of God’s Kingdom in the skies. When we sacrifice our present pleasure and security to better love God and each other, we invest in the coming new creation which contains everything we’ll ever need.

Sermon on the Mount Q R 3 (E25) - What does Jesus mean when he describes people entering the Kingdom of the skies? Are the promises in the Beatitudes possible now, or do we need to wait for the new creation? How did Jesus respond to other perspectives on how to treat our enemies? How do we reconcile Jesus’ teachings on creative nonviolence with violence in the Old Testament narratives? Why does...
Does God Lead Us Into Temptation?

Sermon on the Mount E24 - Many of us first learned the King James translation of the final, personal request in the Lord’s Prayer: “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” But does God actually lead us into temptation? In a motif that weaves throughout the Hebrew Bible, we see God allowing tests to strengthen his partnership with humans. When this motif picks up in the Gospel of...

So It's not about accumulating wealth or material possessions, but about living a life of love, generosity, and service. The treasure is the joy of giving, the peace of loving, and the connections we make along the way. It's about investing in experiences, memories, and relationships that will last for eternity. It's not about giving away everything aimlessly, but about using what we have to love others and honor God. It's about using our resources to build meaningful relationships, spread love and kindness, and bring joy to those around us. Not to gain more wealth or status, but to experience the treasure of heaven right here, right now. Let's focus on storing up treasures that truly matter - love, kindness, compassion, and connection. Let's use what we have to invest in the things that will last forever, and experience the joy and peace of heaven in our daily lives.

Thank you for emphasizing that the righteousness in verse 20 is the righteousness of the believer, as concluded from 6:1. Hence it isn’t the imputed righteousness that changes our standing before God talked in Romans 3. This is the form of right living before God, in the “will of God” which is only possible by the allowing of the working of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer according to Phil 2:12,13. Being a believer who is constantly led by the Holy Spirit doesn’t mean that he would never sin, but that he would sin lesser and lesser often realizing the sinful nature still active in him and the “abundant grace” of God and His vast love working in Him, through which the believer would live according to God’s will and not his own, thereby exceeding his righteousness than the scribes and the Pharisees, only through the Spirit of God. May our gracious Lord Jesus help and empower us all.

I feel so bad about my actions all the time and what I think I deserve that to me there is no way God will give me something nice but He does. It's pretty sad to live like this, it erases all his blessings because my heart always feels like at any time He will abandon me, no because He's not faithful but for who I am. The Book of Matthew, Chapter 5 and Verse 17. If you want to know if Jesus (Yahawashi) is in conflict with the Old Testament, ask an Israelite. We know the Bible. Enjoy your answer, because if you are a Christian you cannot eat pork, just because the Romans said you can. The covenant wasn't made with Romans or Greeks yet so many Christians like to refer to the Greek but always avoid their own history when it comes to their Godly treatment of the Biblical Israelites.

On the topic of violent vs. nonviolent policy on the national level, I think the US's international recovery efforts after WW2 are a powerful example of what far reaching nonviolent policies can achieve. Those efforts successfully flipped nations that were once bitter enemies (Japan and Germany) into great allies only decades later, and a lot of where Europe is today wouldn't be possible without the Marshall Plan. Concerning violence in the Old Testament and how it relates to violence today, I think the best way to address it is to understand that God's instruction in the OT is sort of a "training wheels" version of instruction meant to come later. To put it another way, God respects human agency and makes compromises to work within whatever human capacity or willingness is available. For example, the 10 Commandments are basically the greatest commandment (love God and love others), just restated in a way that holds your hand by spelling out how living that out looks in several common interpersonal relationships. Another example is the guidelines he provided for divorce. It's not part of his ideal plan, but he made provisions for minimizing the damage divorce would do because humans just don't have the willingness to follow that ideal plan, expressed as their "hardness of heart." I believe God is willing to make such provisions, because setting aside smaller stumbling blocks (divorce, polygamy, violence, etc.) gives us room to better tackle more foundational issues first like the overall posture of our heart (see the life of David). Back to violence directed by God in the OT, I think the best way to then explain it is: Human civilization at the time was incredibly violent, one example being some of Israel's neighbors regularly practicing the sacrifice of their own children. Completely upending this widespread violence was not within the capacity of any human civilization at the time, so God took the reigns in redirecting some of it to achieve something more productive in the long run, eliminating or dispersing cultures on unrecoverable trajectories and setting the stage for better things to come later. That standard for violence is not something we should aspire to now. It's something we're supposed to "graduate" past needing. Of course, this is all written by someone with the luxury of living where violence is extremely rare. "It's easy to be a saint in paradise." If a civil war was threatening those I cared about, I'm not sure I could stay out of the violence, but I think there's always room to follow God's example and push for provisions that get us closer to what's ideal. For instance, never take part in cycles of revenge, always attempt to open dialogue with your enemy, and never be afraid to be emotionally vulnerable and express your shared humanity with them.

I just thought I'd tell you guys that I appreciate the Podcast. I use Podbean on my Android phone so that I can listen to them continuously in series, so just thought I'd tell you since that method probably doesn't get captured adequately in terms of listener numbers for you. I see where you post it here on RUclips, then I'm alerted to listen to it, then I move over to my Podbean app to listen to it, but 'like' the video here. Since I try to capture what I read/listen to within The Bible Project app, I then move over that way and mark it as played so I can keep track. I've been loving the Sermon on the Mount series. So important! I love how you are 'foils' for each other during these discussions too. You guys exploring various topics using common misperceptions/attitudes/ideas and framing them as your own even when they aren't... is very Paulinian and cool. I'm looking forward to more classes as you offer them as well. The set of classes you have up now have all been such a blessing. I never get tired of hearing you guys. Thanks for all you do! I hope you have a wonderful week. ❤

The Lord Jesus used the exact same apocalyptic imagery as He did as The Eternal Son speaking in the Old Testament when speaking of His soon coming judgment on unrepentant Jerusalem. He brought destruction in the exact same way as He did in OT, the Roman armies were His locusts and so on in Revelation just like the Babylonians and Assyrians were. He brought three waves of destruction via human military presence and described them as His own “coming in the clouds”. In 66 AD to 70 AD Jesus’s prophecy on The Mount of Olives of coming war and famine came to pass. Jesus most definitely was the same in New Testament as Old Testament.

It is easy to predict war, famine and pestilence. As they are a constant in human society since long before the bible war written. Precise predictions is much harder, and sadly most of the sayings of jesus was written down after they had come true, which makes them biased to their own authors interpretation. Since as you know, no writings of Jesus himself has ever been found.

I wanted to attempt to add more insight on what it means to be 'perfect' like God. In Matthew 5:48, Jesus says, 'You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.' How can we better understand this? Think of it like a puzzle. God's perfection is like a complete puzzle, with all the pieces fitting together perfectly. Our 'perfection' is like a puzzle that's still being worked on - we're constantly growing, learning, and becoming more like Christ. Another way to think about it is like a tree. God's perfection is like a mature tree, fully grown and bearing fruit. Our 'perfection' is like a seedling that's still growing and developing, but has the potential to become a strong and fruitful tree. As 2 Corinthians 7:1 says, '...let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.' It's a journey of growth, transformation, and surrender to God's work in us. I hope this helps!

Hey everyone! If you're struggling to reconcile the Old Testament's accounts of warfare with Jesus' teachings of love and forgiveness, know you're not alone! It's important to consider the historical context, redemptive purpose, and moral complexity of the OT stories. Remember, the OT describes historical events, but not all descriptions are prescriptions for modern behavior. Think of God's relationship with humanity like a parent teaching a child to ride a bike - starting with training wheels and gradually removing them as they grow. Or, picture an artist sketching a rough outline, then adding details and colors, finally revealing a masterpiece. God met the ancient Israelites where they were, but His ultimate plan was always to reveal His full beauty and love through Jesus. Jesus' teachings and example are the fulfillment of the OT law, showing us the higher way of love and forgiveness. God's plan was always to get humanity to reflect Jesus and His teachings - to ride the bike independently, if you will! The OT stories, laws, and commands were all stepping stones towards this goal. Don't let apparent contradictions discourage you - dig deeper, and you'll find a beautiful narrative of God's love and redemption unfolding throughout the Bible! *Challenge:* Try reading the Bible without the hindsight of knowing the end. Immerse yourself in the stories, laws, and prophecies as if you were living in that time period. Ask yourself: "What would I have thought if I were an Israelite hearing the Law for the first time? How would I have understood the promises of a Messiah?" This will help you uncover the deeper richness of the Bible and the Word of God. Take the journey and discover the beauty of God's story unfolding!

I think it may be a mistake to think of the biblical account as a linear narrative of God's relationship with mankind rather than a fleshing-out of mankind by God over time through the cross of Christ where human violence and God's glory are delineated.

      @JTthr3e 8 дней назад

Absolutely, think of some of God's characteristics and nature. He is patient. It means he meets us where we are, but the goal was always to lead us to Jesus. There is so many analogies Jesus uses about this, with farming, gardening etc. We plant seeds, we tend to the soil and slowly create a lavish and robust garden. We have the power of hindsight, but we need to understand that he was meeting his ancient people where they were, just as he meets us where we are. The plan and goal is always Jesus.

Jesus isn't asking God to avoid testing us altogether. God tests us to refine our faith and character, like He tested Abraham and Jesus in the wilderness. Instead, Jesus is teaching us to ask God for protection from the evil one's schemes and temptations that would lead us away from God's will. In essence, we're asking God to: - Test us to refine our faith (like Psalm 66:10, "Test me, O Lord, and try me...") - Protect us from the evil one's temptations and schemes (like Matthew 6:13, "Lead us not into temptation...") In modern terms, we could say, 'God, keep us safe from the temptations that can lead us astray, and rescue us from the grip of evil.' Or, 'God, help us avoid the pitfalls of our own making and the schemes of the devil.' But let's clear up some potential misunderstandings: - This prayer is NOT saying that God tempts us or leads us into sin. James 1:13-14 makes it clear that God doesn't tempt us, and we're responsible for our own desires and actions. - It's NOT asking God to remove all challenges or difficulties from our lives. Trials and testing can be opportunities for growth and refinement, like Jesus' own wilderness experience. - It's NOT a guarantee that we'll never face temptation or evil. Rather, it's a request for divine protection and strength in the face of those challenges. Ephesians 6 Paul writes about the armor of God, which is a powerful metaphor for spiritual warfare. We're not just asking God to refine us by testing us, but also to equip us with the spiritual resources we need to overcome the enemy's schemes. We need the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and sword of the Spirit to stand firm against temptation and evil. And this process of testing and refinement is reminiscent of Malachi 3:3, where God is like a silver refiner, purifying us in the flames of trials and testing. Just as a silver refiner must carefully monitor the process to remove impurities, God carefully watches over us, the silversmith knows the the silver is fully refined, when they can see their image in it. When they can see their reflection; likewise, god is refining our faith and character until we reflect His image. It's a beautiful analogy of how God works with us, refining us until we shine like silver, reflecting His glory. By asking God to "lead us not into temptation," we're acknowledging our vulnerability to sin and asking for His guidance, protection, and strength to overcome the evil one's schemes. We're saying, 'God, we need Your help to navigate life's challenges and stay on the path of righteousness.'

hey Guys you missed the Elephant in the room! I could see this as john kept asking what does this men, what does this mean? Tim never answered him clearly because he was dancing around this idea the churches have of forgiving no matter what, and that is wrong! God does not forgive us unless we repent first. This is repeated over and over in scripture. Jesus only forgave sins of those who repented. So likewise we are not expected to forgive anyone unless they repent. It would be a foolish person indeed, who forgives an unrepentant murderer of their family members, just for the sake of forgiveness. The church leadership have a lot to answer for on Judgement day for teaching this foolishness.

Can you post a link in the show description on RUclips to just the song as a standalone song? I would love to play this for my kids when I put them to bed without having to fast forward in the episode

I know you're taking the whole year to cover the beatitudes, but honestly I could have taken a whole year just from the Lord's prayer

Thank you. This made several passages in the Bible so much clearer and also made these lines from the Lords Prayer so much more understandable. I didn't know why Jesus calls Peter a devil but I can see now that Peter was being used to tempt Jesus.

Hebrew Idiom and Translation The original Greek phrase in the New Testament is: "καὶ μὴ εἰσενέγκῃς ἡμᾶς εἰς πειρασμόν" (kai mē eisenenkēs hēmas eis peirasmon) This translates to: "And do not bring us into temptation." In Hebrew thought and language, idioms and expressions can have different nuances. The phrase "do not lead us into temptation" could be seen as a figure of speech where the emphasis is on asking for protection and guidance away from testing circumstances. It's a plea for spiritual safeguarding rather than implying God actively tempts people.

When I studied "The Lord's Prayer" a few years back & did a sermon I found the phrase 'lead me not into temptation' (by looking @ the original languages, cultural context of the times & using other older learned teachers & commentaries) to be closer to meaning 'Lord drag me away from the sin I want to commit kicking & screaming'. I don't have my notes in front of me, but know the teacing was posted online in a few places. After talking to my wife a bit, it is possible that in my current tired state I may be thinking of the meaning to 'deliver us from evil'.

I love so much the idea that God doesn't test us to see if we will trust him: He knows our hearts, and whether or not we do. The Test exists to give us the opportunity to follow him, and to show the quality of our character to ourselves, recognizing that when we fail we should be humbled, and that when we succeed we ought to thank our God for His work in the gradual sanctification of our hearts which allows us to succeed.

I completely agree with you! Your statement is spot on - God doesn't need to test us to know whether we trust Him; instead, the testing reveals to us the quality of our character and our willingness to follow Him. It's a process of refinement, like the silver refiner in Malachi 3:3, who purifies silver in the flames to remove impurities, until it reflects their image. Similarly, God refines our faith and character through trials, until we reflect His image. And as we face these tests, we're not left defenseless. Ephesians 6 reminds us that we have the armor of God - the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and sword of the Spirit - to stand firm against the enemy's schemes. Your insight highlights the importance of humility and gratitude in this process. When we fail, we should be humbled and recognize our need for God's grace. And when we succeed, we ought to thank God for His work in our hearts, acknowledging that our successes are a result of His sanctifying work in us. Thank you for sharing your wisdom! Your words are a great encouragement to trust God in the midst of trials, knowing that He's refining us for His glory.

How awesome is it that God willingly chose to become human as Jesus and submit Himself to all that humanity goes through. That nothing we suffer was not also suffered by Him. And that in Jesus we have the example of how to stay faithful to God even when we're in the worst moments of life, even when God is asking us to so something we don't. To know that it's ok to feel doubt and fear and to ask God for help, even when its something God wills. Amen. Praise Yahweh the one true God. Revealed Triune as Father, Spirit, and Jesus the Son, each member fully God of which there is only one. 3 distinct Persons coexistant, coequal, and coeternal sharing 1 Divine Essence. Jesus lives and is God, Christ, King. Repent of your sin and believe in Him and be saved to eternal life!
